How talking to an AI health coach can support weight loss

For our latest study, we analyzed data from over 23,000 Simple users, and the results are remarkable. The findings show that the more often you interact with Avo — our in-app AI health coach — the more weight you’re likely to lose.
We presented this research at the 2024 Obesity Week conference in San Antonio, Texas.
What role does Avo play in weight loss?
Avo provides users with practical, real-world tips, including healthy eating suggestions, delicious recipes, and advice on effective weight loss strategies.
By interacting more often with Avo, our research shows that you improve your chances of weight loss success.
What we learned
We analyzed data from 23,445 app users, collected over slightly more than one year. The group was diverse, with 65.3% being women and 32.3% over age 60. They started with an average Body Mass Index (BMI) of 31.8 kg/m². Users tracked their food, exercise, water intake, and weight. The main question was whether more frequent interactions with Avo led to greater weight loss.
We examined how users interacted with Avo over a three-month period, and tracked their weight loss progress. The key takeaway? The more that users talked to Avo, the more weight loss they experienced.
Here’s a closer look at the insights:
Weight loss outcomes
- For users interacting 1–4 days with Avo, weight loss averaged 2.9%.
- With 5–9 days of interaction, weight loss jumped to 3.6%.
- Engage for 10–19 days, and you could see a 4.5% loss.
- Ramp it up to 20–29 days, and the average was 5.6%.
- Those interacting with Avo for 30 days or more experienced up to 6.1% weight loss.
Essentially, each extra 10 days of chatting with an AI coach can add another 0.17% to your weight loss, and doing other activities in the app can boost it by a further 0.56%.
Beyond the statistics is a testament to the power of staying connected and using the tools at your fingertips.
